Renaissance, director Ben Rowarth, presents a visual and musical journey through the sixteenth century taking the audience from the penitential world of English sacred music, into the sensual and intimate European settings of ‘The Song of Songs’, through to the stunningly passionate Italian madrigals of Monteverdi and finishing with moving reflections on love, life and death.

Robert White’s Lamentations a 6, at the centre of the programme, are set against sixteenth century works from England, Spain and Italy which demonstrate fascinating contrasts in styles of the period. Alongside this, two contemporary pieces by Ben Rowarth which are inspired by and directly interact with earlier works within the programme.

Music By White, Victoria, Gesualdo, Monteverdi, Rowarth.
